Archaeobotany research
The archaeobotanical laboratory specializes in the study of macrobotanical material, but the laboratory may also perform research of other eco-facts that require microscopes. The laboratory is equipped with a comparable modern collection of plants as well as eco-factual material from Lithuanian and foreign archeological sites. This collection is a valuable resource for scientific research in a various of academic disciplines. The laboratory is open for Lithuanian and foreign researchers and students with a prior agreement from the head of the laboratory G. Motuzaitė Matuzevičiūtė Keen. Please deliver sediment samples to the following address: M. K. Čiurlionio str. 21, Vilnius:
Research of the archaeobotanical material is carried out in two stages:
- The collection of material and sieving/flotation of sediment samples.
- An analysis of the archaeobotanical material, photo fixation and preparation of the archaeobotanical report.
The sediment flotation laboratory is equipped with a sink that has a sediment trap built in. The facility provides optimal conditions for a range of processes, including sediment flotation, sample drying, sorting, sieving, and initial evaluation of ecofactual material. The archaeobotanical laboratory is equipped with work desks and microscopes, which can be used for the identification of archaeobotanical material. Analysis of archaeobotanical remains (mainly charred plant seeds) provide a valuable information on human diet, medicaine, textile, cooking technologies, and the paleo-environment.
Price list for the macrobotanical analysis:
- First stage (flotation of the sediments samples and collection of the archaeobotanical material).
- The cost of the first stage of the research is 20 EUR per sample (12-liter bucket of dry-sediment sample OR 1-liter sample of waterlogged sediment).
- Second stage (analysis of archaeobotanical material, photo fixation and archaebotanical report).
- The cost of the second stage is valued 18 EUR/hour of work.
- Average cost per sample for a full analysis including archaeobotanical report: approx. 100 EUR.
